Yes, Dataverse supports DOIs. But Dataverse also supports Handles and Permalinks as alternatives to DOIs.

My pr adds full support to all PID types, so for Dataverse, the DOI backend is more than just DOI, it also supports handle, and any other PID. If you like to keep the Dataverse separated from DOI backend (it could be missed easily by people looking for a way to moount a dataset as it is not clearly Dataverse in the name), please leave a comment in the PR. This would help to convince Nick.
