Topic: version publication year in citation

Hi!
We are often asked why the citation year does always stay the publication year of the datasets version.
I don't remember what was the rationale behind this choice, could someone refresh me on this or send me the link of where this is documented ?
This is becoming problematic for our installation as dataset can have a long history with several major versions. In the future we'd probably try to have an option so willing installation could use the major version's year instead of the first publication year, but I wanted to know the reason for the current implementation first

I asked about this last year in the Google forum:

There is an issue about it:

Yeah, this is annoying. I have a dataset that I first published in 2017 and that's the date that shows despite newer versions. I haven't gotten around to fixing it with this API: https://guides.dataverse.org/en/6.4/api/native-api.html#set-citation-date-field-type-for-a-dataset
