Topic: Upgrade to 5.14 - metric count not working

view this post on Zulip Bethany Seeger (May 13 2025 at 17:50):

Hello,

We recently upgraded our server from 5.13 to 5.14. Someone noticed that the metric count on the front page is no longer going up when something is downloaded.

We had missed updating the doi jvm options, so I just fixed that on our test and staging server. While our test server seems to work okay, our staging server will not update that number if someone downloads a document.

We are not using Make Data Count (yet). How can I trouble shoot this?

Thanks!
Bethany

I did just notice this thread: https://groups.google.com/g/dataverse-community/c/CVj5nG3EIhA/m/WcWzX-YFBQAJ

Perhaps I just don't understand how that feature works.

Part of the issue though, is before the upgrade we thought we had 5000+ downloads on our production site. Now the number is around 4833. Would something have made it go down? (I don't think it's related to the upgrade, as we have some stats before the upgrade and after that seem okay).

One thing to consider is that the download count is not incremented if you download your own data, as superuser or as someone with access to the data.

If you log out and download something, does the download count go up?

Hi Philip, on the dataset count itself (aggregated download count for dataset), the number will go up. But the overall metric still stays the same (at the top of the site on the first page).

Ok, it sounds like the thread on the mailing list is probably relevant, then. Jim is the one who knows the most about this. He's not here in Zulip. Would you be able to reply on that thread or start a new one?

Sure, I'll add on to that thread. Thanks!

Thanks for posting. Out of curiosity, does https://dataverse.yale.edu/api/info/metrics/downloads go up? As https://guides.dataverse.org/en/6.6/api/metrics.html explains, the values are cached, though. I supposed you'd have to set the cache timeout to a low value to test.
