Topic: Point of Contact / Contact Owner

Older versions of Dataverse had an "envelope" if clicked would send an email to the "point of contact" email address.

That "envelope" is no longer on the dataset page and I think is replaced by the "Contact Owner" button?

But is the "Point of Contact" the "Dataset Owner"? Different terms used here and one of my researchers found it confusing?

Yeah I'd say the point of contact isn't always the owner.

Is your researcher someone who was publishing data or someone who needed to contact someone about their data?

It's also about how "Point of contact" is displayed on the metadata tab:

It says "use email button above"

But the button is labeled "Contact Owner"
So if I click the button, will the email go to "Point of contact" email address?

And.... I guess I can check myself, which I will.

Yeah I'm sure that clicking "Contact Owner" button will open a popup and any message sent from it will go to the "Point of contact" email address

Is it safe to say your researcher is someone publishing data? I ask since I think all of this can be confusing in different ways, like depending on if the person was searching for data or depositing it, right?

They thought that the label "Point of Contact" and the label "Contact Owner" were different emails (different persons).

My thought.... if the metadata has field labeled "Point of Contact" - the the button should also be "Point of Contact" OR..... just "Contact" and not have the work "Owner".

Hmm, I agree that "Contact Owner" is a bit misleading.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin 🚀 (Oct 15 2024 at 17:52):

The button is an action so like you say "Contact" may be best. A verb.

view this post on Zulip Julian Gautier (Oct 15 2024 at 19:51):

Yeah. I think it's likely that whoever labeled that button thought that the contact would always be the owner or that whoever used that button would want to contact the owner, whoever that wound up being.

Your researcher wants to make sure they know who's getting contacted when someone finds their data and presses that contact button.

Would a button that reads "Contact" help your researcher know this?

I'm curious what Sherry thinks too.

Meanwhile, here's what we show at the collection level, an email icon next to the word "Contact" and a tooltip that says "Email Dataverse Contact".

If we did this for the dataset level maybe the tooltip could say "Email Point of Contact" for consistency.

Hmm.... not sure where the envelope would fit on a dataset. I like the compact buttons on the dataset page, but the button should just say "Contact" then mouse-over could say "Email point of contact".

Here's what it says now.

Sure. Simple text change.
