Stream: containers

Topic: โœ” setting up a website

In preparation to the kickoff I also added a page for the working group. https://dc.wgs.gdcc.io/ (Basically a fork & edit & tweak of swc.wgs.gdcc.io, thx @Ana Trisovic)

A message was moved here from #containers > kickoff meeting by Philip Durbin.

Nice! I'm still thinking about "DC"... so far we've been calling it the Containerization Working Group or CWG.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 12:46):

"wgs" stands for working groups?

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 12:49):

I recently created a page here: https://dataverse.org/working-groups

Yes. As it has been used before, I sticked with the pattern.

I used the name of the draft proposal. Dataverse Containerization seems like a clear message what this is about.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 12:56):

Yeah, naming is hard. What about cwg.dataverse.org?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 13:38):

I do like the idea to have gdcc.io as part of the URL to make this more attached to the GDCC. And I'd rather not see 100 different flavors of how we create web pages for working groups

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:47):

http://gdcc.io redirects to https://dataversecommunity.global . Interesting.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:47):

And there's a button there called "Working Groups" that takes you to a URL with "interest groups" in it: https://dataversecommunity.global/interest-groups

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:47):

What a mess.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:49):

How active are any of these? Not very, I'd say.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:51):

How many "wgs" sites do we have? Just the one? I'm not in love with "wgs".

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:51):

We should have a list of all the "wgs" sites.

Ok, so the old defunct one and now this new one. Thanks.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 13:54):

Defunct?

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:55):

Is that working group still working?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 13:56):

Well we didn't meet in quite a while, but I suppose we can reactivate it if needed. It's still a very relevant topic

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:57):

Oh, absolutely. And we even having funding for it currently. I forget which aim.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 13:58):

And to be fair: in the past the IQSS wasn't really acknowledging working groups of the community. There are various reasons to that, many fingers to point, but however, one outcome of past chaos was that this working group crumbled...

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 13:59):

Right. In a retrospective yesterday I talked about working groups. How I really want the new one to succeed and be a model for future working groups.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 14:00):

That's what it needs for the community to feel included and heard

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 14:00):

And there were a lot of choices in the recent past that hopefully add to this

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:00):

How does containers-wg.gdcc.io grab ya?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 14:01):

It if helps, we can do whatever we want. Switching these two domains and websites to sth else probably won't hurt much.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 14:02):

(And I can leave a redirect in place, so old links don't break)

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:02):

I'm jotting down ideas in the kickoff doc under "possible URLs".

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:02):

Right, yes, a redirect would be nice if we do switch to a new convention.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 17 2023 at 14:02):

If it pleases ya, we can also make it cwg.gdcc.io

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:03):

I'll add that to the doc!

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:04):

I'm glad we chose #containers as the name for the stream here in Zulip. Pretty clear.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:05):

In general, I'm not a fan of hyphens in domain names, by the way, so I can't believe I suggested containers-wg as the subdomain.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:06):

Part of why I don't like "dc" is that it introduces yet another acronym. You have to remember what it means.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:29):

Especially since we plan to push images to gdcc on DockerHub (and GitHub) rather than IQSS, it probably does make sense to have the working group website under gdcc.io.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 17 2023 at 14:31):

Ok, I might change my vote after I sleep on it (or people think of better options), but I'm voting for the hyphen one. Please see the kickoff doc and how I'm suggesting that we vote with initials.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 22 2023 at 14:01):

I touched on the URL for the website in the kickoff meeting. It looks like I'm the only one who voted:

dc.wgs.gdcc.io or dc.wgs.dataverse.org
containers-wg.gdcc.io (PD) or containers-wg.dataverse.org
cwg.gdcc.io or cwg.dataverse.org
ct.gdcc.io or ct.dataverse.org
ct-wg.gdcc.io or ct-wg.dataverse.org

Does that mean we go for the URL with the most votes? :stuck_out_tongue_wink:

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 22 2023 at 14:10):

Well you did not explain how to vote or that we should

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 22 2023 at 14:11):

Yeah, I didn't want to spend much time on it during the call. Shall we say voting happens here? I did mention this topic and link to it.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Mar 22 2023 at 14:12):

How about we nudge the folks that want to be part of the WG to come here and vote?

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 22 2023 at 14:12):

Or put it on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting?

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 23 2023 at 18:58):

Is it enough to link to the Zoom recording?

We could also download the videos and upload them to our Google Drive folder.

We could even upload them to YouTube, mainly to easily navigate to a specific timestamp. (I don't think Zoom supports this.)

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 23 2023 at 19:36):

Only @Guillermo Portas and I have voted:

dc.wgs.gdcc.io or dc.wgs.dataverse.org
containers-wg.gdcc.io (PD) or containers-wg.dataverse.org
cwg.gdcc.io or cwg.dataverse.org
ct.gdcc.io or ct.dataverse.org (GP)
ct-wg.gdcc.io or ct-wg.dataverse.org

And that was before I explained we will probably favor a gdcc.io domain.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 23 2023 at 19:41):

I wonder if it's safe to assume he would vote for ct.gdcc.io.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Mar 24 2023 at 12:25):

I just checked with @Guillermo Portas and he's fine with ct.gdcc.io ("more simple"). Fine with me. How about you, @Oliver Bertuch ? We are the only three who voted.

Sure, the logo is fine BUT with @Oliver Bertuch 's permission, I think we should switch it to this one from https://github.com/gdcc/dataverse-kubernetes/blob/v4.20/docs/img/building-blocks.svg
