Topic: Feature : how to use the datatags?

Hi, I have successfully deployed dataverse in my VM and I would like to work on the part of datatags data categorization hierarchy, how can I see the effect in the platform? I see that there is very little about this part in the official guidance document.

I'm not sure Datatags are already implemented!

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 05:52):

It's been in planning for a long time...

Not much activity in https://github.com/IQSS/DataTaggingLibrary

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 05:54):

It's still on the list though: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse-pm/issues/148

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 05:55):

Would you like to work on that?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 05:55):

We always appreciate new contributors!

view this post on Zulip charles wei (Apr 16 2024 at 06:51):

So what you're saying is that the part of the dataverse that I deployed following the tutorial doesn't village the presence of datatags?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 06:53):

We should wait for @Philip Durbin to wake up (~4-5h from now) for reference. As far as I know, DataTags are not yet supported in Dataverse. There is support for labels, but that might not be what you want/need.

view this post on Zulip charles wei (Apr 16 2024 at 06:58):

Do you know how this project code is used for deployment, please?https://github.com/IQSS/DataTaggingLibrary

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 07:04):

Sorry, I don't know anything about that code. Maybe @Philip Durbin has a few pointers. https://datatags.org seems dead. https://privacytools.seas.harvard.edu/datatags seems outdated. Seems like the idea is still out there but maybe will never be fully implemented.

If you are interested in storing sensitive data in a Dataverse installation, there is a working group. Not sure how active they are and it's not easy to get on the Slack instance because Slack. I know that @Johannes D and @Vera Clemens are dealing with sensitive health data.

view this post on Zulip charles wei (Apr 16 2024 at 07:07):

Anyway, thank you for your help.

The last working group meeting was in January online and in March at the Dataverse Community Meeting. Sounds like they are still going!

i get a question:https://groups.google.com/g/dataverse-community/c/-qhu384a5h8/m/rNFSPyPFBQAJ According to denny's description, the datatags feature is built into the dataverse 5.0 and up can it be interpreted that way?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 09:15):

That is very outdated information. Dataverse 5.0 was released mid 2020 and never contained this implementation. The email you're referring to is from 2017...

DataTags was never released. Yes there is a new working group for sensitive data

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 16 2024 at 10:34):

I would suggest joining it

Is there an opportunity for me to join the datatags research programme to do some development and pioneering based on the current research content and progress?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 11:03):

On one of the pages I sent above there was a list of people involved. Maybe the PI is still around?

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 11:03):

@Philip Durbin might know other folks at IQSS that are/were involved

You are always welcome to join the Dataverse Community as a contributor! We appreciate people putting together new solutions.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 11:05):

Given the size of the problem and amount of effort needed to pull it of, it would probably be a good idea to come up with some design ideas first and discuss them with the sensitive data working group.

view this post on Zulip Oliver Bertuch (Apr 16 2024 at 11:06):

This is an open source project and people joining working groups that can actually contribute time are very welcome! :innocent:

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 16 2024 at 13:08):

@charles wei I'm asking but I still think the best way to contribute at this point is to join the sensitive data working group.

view this post on Zulip charles wei (Apr 16 2024 at 13:22):

Thanks for the reply, but I see that there seems to be a fee to join the group, which is a lot of money for me, anyway, thanks for your help!

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 16 2024 at 13:22):

@charles wei oh, sorry for the confusion. There is no fee to join a working group!

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 16 2024 at 13:23):

You're right that there is a fee to join the GDCC as a member organization, but (again) there is no fee to join working groups.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 16 2024 at 13:23):

@Philipp Conzett do you think we should put a note about this on the working groups page?

view this post on Zulip charles wei (Apr 16 2024 at 14:27):

But if I want to join the group I have to pay a membership fee right, maybe there are other ways to join the work that don't cost anything? I'm still working on my masters and have no income

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 16 2024 at 14:30):

@charles wei there is no fee to join the sensitive data working group. I checked with the organizer and she gave me this link to pass along to you: https://join.slack.com/t/dataversecommunity/shared_invite/zt-2gy9hvfwi-wDp5XMdi9usSthYTlSdchQ

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 16 2024 at 15:22):

Sure. I appreciate your interest and willingness to help! DataTags was a hot topic many years ago but development has slowed.

Yes, I think that would be useful. What about adding the following text on top of the Working Groups page?:

Everyone is welcome to join our groups. No (GDCC) fee is required to join a group.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin ๐Ÿš€ (Apr 17 2024 at 10:37):

@Philipp Conzett thanks, I just created https://github.com/gdcc/dataversecommunity.global/pull/5

If it looks ok, please go ahead and merge it.

@charles wei https://www.gdcc.io/working-groups.html looks better now. No fee for joining a group:
