There is an ongoing discussion in Spain about where Data Management Plans should be archived to remain FAIR, taking into account that they require a persistent identifier and metadata.
Currently, DMPTool allows assigning a DOI to a DMP within the tool, and @Philip Durbin 🚀 pointed me to how it can be included in a dataset using RSpace.
The problem is that some DMP platforms —such as Argos and other OpenCDMP‑based software— do not allow assigning a DOI or any other persistent identifier to a DMP within the platform, and they do not provide an API to access DMP metadata. However, OpenCDMP does allow sending the DMP PDF with some basic metadata to certain repositories, including Dataverse, using the Dataverse API and an API key.
Since DataCite supports DMPs (*OutputManagementPlan*) as a Resource Type, could Dataverse have a new datasetType for Data Management Plans?
Right, here's more about the RSpace integration:
As shown in a video <https://www.researchspace.com/blog/dmptool-rspace-eln-dataverse-integration>, a Data Management Plan (DPM) can be added into RSpace and the research records and associated data can then be sent to Dataverse. Dataverse generates a Persistent Identifier (PID, often a DOI) for the dataset, and RSpace automatically puts the PID link under "Research Outputs" in the DPM.
The approach that Argos/OpenCDMP follows is different, creating the DMP as a separate item. This could be useful in the cases:
Well, Dataverse is good at assigning DOIs.
Dataverse can even assign a DOI to a file. What if you upload the DMP as a file in a dataset?
Sure , and metadata as well.
But we are receiving requests to have DMPs as a separate FAIR item with their own actionable metadata. I wonder if there are the same need in the Dataverse community. If not, we will add the new datasetType in our own Dataverse implementation.
I hope no one is offended if I add another type to the discussion: I have a recent request where the operators of ATRIS are asking me if we can provide with an easy way to register their instruments. They want to add PID references to their data aquisitions which instruments have been used. DataCite does offer this type since schema 4.5 and Dataverse would allow for nice metadata as well as documentation etc. for the instruments.
